In 2024, I expect more multiples and independents to put their pharmacies up for sale. Independent owners who have managed their own pharmacies for over 30 years may decide it’s time to take an early retirement. We are all aware that more time will be spent offering NHS and private services which is a fundamental mindset change to just dispensing medication. The government will make people aware of the new services pharmacists will offer to take pressure off the General Practitioners. Cashflow pressures will increase as dispensing margins come under pressure and the phased roll out of Pharmacy First services will mean staggered income for the first year.

This will bring opportunities for young pharmacist to be pharmacy owners. Despite the challenging macro-economic environment, pharmacy sale prices for independents remain stubbornly high. Therefore, a young pharmacist may not have the capital to purchase their first pharmacy outright and that’s where I can help. Over the past ten years, I’ve purchased over 10 pharmacies in a co-ownership model where the young pharmacist owns equity as well as like minded investors. The pharmacist has full autonomy to run the pharmacy themselves and I’m there in the background to give advice and guidance.
